Tappahannock, VA, October 10, 2010 --
Make a date in your calendar for the final Tappahannock Farmers’ Market of the 2010 season! Visit us this Saturday from 9am to 1pm on Cross Street, Fountain Green and Courthouse Green for what promises to be a largest and most diverse market with special emphasis on the Halloween and Christmas seasonal accents. Market vendors and visitors have had such a great turnout that we have enlarged the market to include both Fountain Green and Courthouse Green.
As usual the major emphasis is on farmers’ produce, vegetables and fruit, flowers and plants, seafood, chicken and beef, cheeses and baked goods, and of course arts and crafts – all our vendors are returning this month largely due to the support and loyalty of the Tappahannock customer base, some market vendors are now choosing Tappahannock Market over previous commitments to other farmers’ markets in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
New vendors coming in October include Rappahannock Recreation Association with home made jams and jellies, Allie Villanueva of Walkerton offering handmade jewelry and floral arrangements, Mark Cawthorne of King George will be giving antique seat weaving demonstrations, Ephesus Baptist Church is holding a baked goods sale, Sharon Ashley of Tappahannock with handmade gold/silver beaded jewelry, Dale Grenier of Warsaw making custom wood signs and nautical items, and John Kline of Millers Tavern will have holiday themed rustic style crafts for sale. We will also have a pair of live alpacas along with alpaca wool garments available. Check the booth line up for all vendors - click here for October vendors
Celebrating Halloween is part of the market theme this month, We are hosting a Costume Contest and Photo opportunity for young children. The contest is open to all children newborn to 10 years old and will take place at noon on the old Essex Courthouse steps on Prince Street. Parents are invited to bring over their little gouls, goblins, pirates and princesses to join the fun. Participants will then march in a procession at noon, through the Farmers' Market and back. Judges will choose three winners who will receive Halloween treat bags, cash prizes and a free 8 x 10 in their costume portrait. The costume contest is sponsored by the Rappahannock Times, Wee-Cycled Kidzwear, Picture This Photography and the Tappahannock Farmers' Market. For a small fee, Dawn Howeth will take a photograph of your child, pet or family in front of a festive fall backdrop between 10am and 1pm at Wee-Cycled Kidzwear, 320 Prince Street.
Adding to the festival atmosphere and combining their annual fall bazaar with our market, will be the Tappahannock Memorial United Methodist Church. Several TMUMC booths on Courthouse Green will offer an assortment of homemade baked goods, homemade vegetable beef soup, a variety of crafts such as wreaths, aprons, handcrafted pens, jewelry, table coverings, Advent calendars, kitchen tea towels and knitted items. The proceeds will be used to support local missions within the surrounding counties.

Adding to the atmosphere, music will be provided by Snakehead Run, a trio from the DC area playing infectious, hard driving old-time acoustic blues. Instruments include mandolin, fiddle, harmonica, resonator guitar, washtub bass, jug and various rude noises – it should make for a lively show in the market.
The featured artist this month is the talented Karin Andrews - a self-taught professional artist/muralist whose work has been featured in numerous notable historic properties and high end homes in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula of Virginia. One of her favorite projects is the mural she painted in the conference room of the Ritchie House - a 43' long panoramic mural depicts various scenes from what Prince Street and Essex County may have looked like about 1760. Asked about what inspired her work, she commented "From the time I was a child I was particularly drawn to historic homes, architecture, great music, the history of Essex County and the entire Chesapeake Bay Region. My very first County Historic Icon print was my Essex County, Virginia print. Since that time I have produced over 26 prints, from original watercolors, for different markets and am working on many new counties for 2011." Karin has a new line of prints, very personal notecards, the same old favorite cards and much more. Check out her artwork exhibition and prints and notecards for sale just in time for Christmas!
Other major events in Tappahannock this weekend include the St. Margaret’s Alumnae Association Craft Festival on Friday from 10am to 5pm on St. Margaret’s Campus, Free Clinic’s Wine on the Water party at the foot of Prince Street on Friday evening, and St. Margaret’s 5K River Run at 8am on Saturday morning. Truly a non-stop series of weekend events!
Tappahannock Farmers’ Market is an initiative of the Tappahannock Main Street Program, a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to the revitalization of downtown Tappahannock.
