The Tappahannock Main Street Program, the Town of Tappahannock and Essex County have planned a series of monthly Farmers’ Markets to be located in historic downtown Tappahannock. The markets will be held from 9-1 pm on the third Saturday of each month starting April and running through November (but not June as this is RivahFest). The market is located on Cross Street, on Fountain Green, and the Courthouse Green, in the center of Tappahannock, one block from the intersection of Route 17 and 360.

Tappahannock Main Street Program is planning a series of monthly Farmer's Markets to be located on Cross Street in downtown Tappahannock. The markets will be held from 9-1 pm on the third Saturday of each month starting in July 2010, and will feature music by local performers.
"From our public survey and meetings with local business owners, we have heard from the residents of Tappahannock that they would like to see community events in the historic downtown area. One of the top requests was for a Farmer's Market," commented Forrest French, Chairman. The Main Street organization hopes to attract quality vendors who will sell food, crafts and music in the warm months of the year. "What we have in mind are small festivals, where families can come out, find fresh foods and shop for crafts and art, and experience some of the wonderful local music we have here," said Edie Bowles, committee member.
The Main Street Program is now actively recruiting a volunteer manager, event volunteers, and vendors for the market. "This is an opportunity for someone to coordinate the markets, and participate in the fun. This is our first big high-profile effort, and we expect it to have some of the energy of Rivahfest, when the community comes together to make something exciting happen," said David Broad, Committee Member.
The Markets will feature vegetables and fruits, meats and seafood, garden plants and accessories, home made crafts and fine arts, and an assortment of restaurant and food vendors, as well as music by local performers.
Planning for the markets began in November of 2009. At a meeting of community stakeholders to decide the priorities for the Main Street Program for 2010, the consensus was to create a Farmer's Market. “We are taking our time, doing it right. There's a great deal of planning and organizing to do before the first farmer's market in July,” commented TMSP committee member Brooke Kriete Mullery. Main Street will provide guidance and management, in cooperation with the town, the county and civic association partners.
The Markets will be located on Cross Street between Route 360 and Prince Street, on the third Saturday of the month from 9am to 1pm. Music performances are slated from 11am to 1pm. The planned dates are May 21, June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17, October 15, and November 19 in 2011.
The Tappahannock Main Street Program (TMSP) is a grass roots community effort initiated by local citizens, business and property owners, and members of civic groups, to promote the revitalization and historic preservation of downtown Tappahannock.
